Todmorden is a small Pennine town
with a population of about 15,500 within
the borough boundary whic covers a
wide area. The Lancashire/Yorkshire
boundary once ran through the centre of
the town but we are now wholly in
Yorkshire but with a cricket team in the
Lancashire League and a
Lancashire post code. St Mary’s (C of E) is
in the Diocese of Leeds and St Joseph’s
(RC) is in the Diocese of Salford!
CHURCHES TOGETHER IN TODMORDEN
Healthy Minds
The Calderdale charity known as Healthy Minds (HM)
has operated a drop-in at Roomfield for some time,
offering support to people experiencing difficulties with
their mental health. It has recently been a weekly
event. The rooms were rented from the church, and
two HM workers and two HM volunteers were in
attendance.
In early July, HM informed the church that the grant
funding which supported this activity is no longer
available, so the workers would become redundant and
the drop-in come to end. Our Minister Stuart Jenkins
visited some of the sessions, and was aware that those
attending were dismayed that it may be discontinued.
The
church
has
decided
to
facilitate
its
continuation
by
offering
the
rooms
free
of
charge.
After
discussion
with
HM,
it
has
been
agreed
that
the
two
HM
volunteers
will
continue,
HM
will
base
a
one-to-one
worker
at
the
church
during
the
sessions,
and
there
will
be
at
least
one Roomfield volunteer for each session.
This
drop-in
is
not
a
lunch
club,
although
lunch
has
been
provided
for
recent
sessions.
Discussions
are
ongoing about continuing with this.
The
drop-in
is
temporarily
suspended
whilst
the
new
arrangements
are
finalised
and
training
takes
place.
It
is
likely
to
recommence
on
the
19th
of
October,
and
as
before
operate
every
week
on
Wednesday,
from
1pm
to
3pm.
Warm Space
The
church
has
also
decided
to
open
the
building
as
a
Warm
Space
every
Monday
afternoon,
from
2pm
to
5pm.
At
least
two
Roomfield
volunteers
will
be
in
attendance,
and
will
provide
tea,
coffee,
juice,
biscuits
etc.
There
will
be
no
structured
activities,
but
children’s
toys
are
available
and
some
adult
games
may
also
be
provided.
We
hope
that
the
event
will
develop
to
accommodate
the
wishes
of
the
people
who
attend,
but
the
opportunity
to
keep
warm
and
perhaps
to
socialise
with others in the same situation is the main aim.
The
start
date
may
be
3rd
October,
but
this
is
still
to
be
confirmed.
The
warm
space
will
be
publicised
on
social media.
